Carinia [Hits: 23917]

Carinia Co. Pty. Ltd. - a Sydney-based recording company, specializing in re-issues of European music, first of all Polish. Founded in 1952 by Michael (Mieczyslaw) and Nathalie Kulakowski, Polish refugees. The company was named after an aboriginal word meaning 'home'. Carinia was issuing both 78 rpm records and EPs/LPs. As for 1977, it was the largest privately owned record company of Australia. Operated at least until 1988. The company had its own orchestra (under Stefan Bialoguski) and a radio program. Some records show participation of E. M. I. Sales & Services Ltd. (this name and Emidisc logo were found embossed under the label).

Notation system of 78 rpm series: the first letter shows ethnic origin of music (it also determinates the label's color), the second letter denotes matrix manufacturer ("C" for Carinia's own matrices, including re-recordings, other letters for imported matrices). For example:
GT - German recordings (matrices from Telefunken, Germany),
PC - Polish recordings (own matrices),
PD - Polish recordings (matrices from Dana, USA),
PM - Polish recordings (matrices from Melodia, USA),
PO - Polish recordings (matrices from Polonia (Orbis-Polonia), UK),
PS - Polish recordings (matrices from Simfonia, USA),
PSS - Polish recordings (pre-WW2 matrices from Syrena-Electro, copied by Dana, USA),
RC - Russian recordings (own matrices),
UB - Ukrainian recordings of bandurist chorus, conductor V. Bozhik (Boshyk) (set #2),
UC - Ukrainian recordings (own matrices),
UW - Ukrainian recordings (matrices from Arka, Canada),
YM - Yugoslavian recordings (matrices from Jugoton, Yugoslavia).
