Derby records were cheap and small 20 cm diameter, light-blue labelled German "records to dance", which in late 1920s/early 1930 flooded German market, having emerged in 1920s from the brown-label 25 cm and much less popular Derby records production. Derby "house band" was a mysterious Karkoff-Orchester, which appears on most sides as either the name of an actually existing dance orchestra directed by one Mr Karkoff (that's what some sources claim) or rather being (- what seems closer to the truth) a legal trick to cover various orchestras that were active in Berlin during last years of the Weimar Republic. Listening to these "Karkoff Orchester" recordings, more experienced listeners can easily identify certain bands by their more characteristic arrangements or instrumental sounding, eg Paul Godwin's, Efim Schachmeister's or Marek Weber's orchestras. Yet sometimes - like in this case - it is not quite so easy and the band will probably remain uncredited. |
