Attention Webmaster: Scan and MP3 probably PIRATED !!!!
Does german_retro have the right to repost Gallica items here (a written permission of BnF is generally required for anything else but listening and viewing their material on the Gallica website itself)? In that case, he/she should post his/her permission here, to prove he/she is a honest person and not a criminal offender, otherwise all the Gallica stuff should be quickly removed and the person(s) pirating it here banned from this forum. Yes, he does - german_retro acts under my supervision. Back in 2010 I have contacted Gallica and asked their permission to re-post relevant records from their archive on my website. In reply I received e-mail with "Conditions d'utilisation des contenus de Gallica". One of the paragraphs says:

"La réutilisation non commerciale de ces contenus est libre et gratuite dans le respect de la législation en vigueur et notamment du maintien de la mention de source."

that is translated from French as:

"Non-commercial reuse of the content is free of charge in accordance with the legislation in force and maintenance of the reference to the source."

At that time all label scans and MP3s files were freely available for download from Gallica website, so I have downloaded many files for later re-posting on our website; german_retro uses those previously downloaded files.

Since all the files were legally downloaded, our website is non-commercial and we maintain reference to the Gallica website we do comply with "Conditions d'utilisation".

OK thanks for the clarification, then it's all correct legally and you can basically ignore my previous comment (Shall I delete it? If I do so, your answer becomes an "orphan" and you should delete that as well...). Still I see little point in regurgitating info that is freely available elsewhere, and frankly find it confusing at times - you know, I see a "new" entry here that falls in the scope of my interest and hope for a previously undocumented record, and then it's all old hat because I've already seen it at Gallica or the LoC National Jukebox, with no extra value (audio/picture restoration, better documentation) added: On the contrary, the audio and visual quality is often somewhat reduced through re-encoding the data. Simply put, duplicating Gallica and LoC data does not add to our collective knowledge, but only increases the bulk of material one has to sift through to find what one might be looking for.

It's a different matter if you want to present a "complete" discography of an artist or a label and have to borrow materials from many sources to achieve this goal, but that's obviously not what this (or Gallica's, or the LoC's) site is intended for - or am I missing something?

What is the point of this forum
The point is to collect Russian records from every source and make it accessible. Nobody would search for Polish Pathe discs at Gallica! It is therefore most wellcome that it is listed here.

I think it's better to keep our discussion because the very same question may be raised by someone else in the future.

We do not re-encode neither audio nor visual materials from Gallica. As I already mentioned, in the past the "Download" link on the Gallica website was fully functional and I have downloaded all MP3 files using it. Not a single bit of those files was altered. The labels are displayed on our website in reduced (and therefore re-encoded) format, but the originals are also available via utilization of "Download" and "Zoom" buttons.

As Stephan (sobinovv) absolutely correctly pointed out, "the point is to collect Russian records from every source and make it accessible". The ultimate goal of our project is to present a "complete picture" of Russian 78 RPM epoch, with label scans and audio for each label, each artist. I understand that it may take decades to achieve, but as Russian proverb says, "one who keeps on walking will reach the end of the road".

Днює і ночує;
Ой не будем серце, в парі,
Душа моя чує.
