Thanks Yuri! And I look forward to the sound file korrarmunt.

I hadn't thought about the 19921 number - that is hard to explain. Also the Metropol style leadout groove.

If they were adding Ox numbers to any pre-revolutionary numbers, this would be a big confusion. If so, I hope that it is a unique mistake.

But if it is true, it might add to the evidence that the Ox number is not a matrix number but a side number added at the time of issue, and the numbers around 1000 are the real matrix numbers, at least on the early Ox recordings, but are often not visible anywhere on the record.

Thank you korrarmynt and Adrian!

It looks like Ox numbers were intended not only for own Muzpred recordings, but also for re-issues - otherwise it's difficult to explain their presence on the Muzpred label.

If the record was popular and if for whatever reason Muztrest was unable to continue pressing (for instance if they used Master as Stamper wherewith ruined it after 1000 copies or so) they would decide to re-record it, but keep the same Ox number.

I hope that they used Ox only for Soviet recordings except in very special cases. This is the first Ox I've seen or heard which is not Soviet.

I'm completely sure that the Muztrest issue is a Soviet recording, and the Ox number dates it to 1926. The fact that this RAOG recording has the same Ox number suggests to me that this is a replacement for the Soviet recording. I think that 1926 was the date of a second big issue of pre-revolutionary masters, so perhaps they found this better RAOG recording soon after recording the title. But why then issue the Muztrest in c.1929 with the Soviet recording??

If we can find the complete 1926 catalogue this might help explain this puzzle.
