The balalaika is a very ancient instrument peculiar to Russia. It is capable of producing a curious effect of rushing wildness, and this record is a welcome change from the general run of Western songs and instruments and orchestras. As played on the balalaika Schubert’s "Moment Musical" sounds strange, but rather beautiful, and entirely unsentimental. In the Wieniawski the wildness is still more noticeable, and the effect is of music in gusts.
